Maarte Since Birth Tote Bag

Maarte Since Birth Tote Bag

Behind the word

Maarte is a term often used to describe someone, usually a woman, as overly dramatic, nit-picky, or high-maintenance. It’s frequently wielded in a derogatory way to criticize someone who pays too much attention to detail—or even someone who expresses emotions or mental health struggles. For too long, Pinays have been treated with contempt for seeking more than what’s currently offered to them, or for daring to show vulnerability.

But by embracing kaartehan (the quality of being maarte) as a valid expression of character, creativity, and self-care, we pave the way for women to reclaim their right to be expressive and particular. This includes normalizing emotional expression and recognizing the importance of our mental well-being. When we assert ourselves or prioritize our mental health, we shouldn’t be dismissed or ridiculed for being maarte. It’s time to view maarte as a reflection of our ability to properly communicate our emotions, and  be creative in our aspirations—and to celebrate it as a strength, not a flaw.
